According to the philosopher Wittgenstein, "The limits of my language are the limits of my universe." There is no doubt that learning a second language expands one's horizons and at Thames we offer Spanish, the second-most widely spoken language in the world. With 350 million native speakers worldwide, learning to communicate in Spanish improves employment potential and will also enhance many travel experiences.
Spanish is taught to all pupils in Key Stage 3 and is an option at GCSE for those who wish to study it further. In Years 9 and 10, pupils have the opportunity to visit a residential centre in Malaga, Spain, where intensive daily language lessons are interspersed with visits to historical sites, including the Alhambra in Granada, and cultural experiences such as salsa lessons!
When we went to Spain it was the best experience I’ve had all year. Meeting all the kids and getting to improve my Spanish was definitely a highlight.
