We aim to inspire pupils to gain a broad knowledge of music across different cultures, styles and traditions as they engage with: classical and world music, music theatre, songwriting and music and the media. At Thames we understand the increasing significance of musical technology in the 21st Century, and so our pupils are given a strong platform for future development through an introduction to Logic and Garage Band on our iMac computers.

As well as more formalised opportunities to perform, such as the choir and small instrumental groups, pupils are given the chance to create their own bands to entertain real audiences.

We pride ourselves on being responsive to pupils' particular areas of interest and expertise; viisiting teachers offer individual private tuition in a wide variety of instruments. The whole school benefits from workshops run by professional performers from time to time such as drummer Josh Mackenzie and guitarist Daniel Macfarlane.

Moses' Story

Moses is a particularly gifted percussionist, learning to play by watching and listening to others. Three years ago staff at Thames entered him in a local music festival, where he was spotted. This led to his being invited to study percussion at the Royal College of Music Junior Department for gifted young musicians on Saturdays. Moses achieved nearly 2 grades higher than his KS2 SATs predictions with an A in Physical Education, B in Music and Cs in English and Drama.

There is an interesting and varied curriculum of good quality and good teaching which engage pupils’ interests effectively.
