Pupils with English as an Additional Language (EAL) bring whole patterns of learning and cultural experience into the school which we recognise as a benefit. Research shows that pupils who speak two languages do better across the curriculum than those who only speak one.
Pupils acquire a second language most effectively when they are engaged in learning. Specialist EAL work is initially given by withdrawal from classes and working with a qualified EAL teacher, either individually or in small groups. Support is maintained as pupils gain social English - we recognise it takes further years to develop academic proficiency in the language. We have successfully educated EAL pupils from Korea, Russia, Thailand, Germany, France, Spain, Sri Lanka, Poland and Nigeria.
Evgeny's Story
Evgeny came to Thames in Year 10 from Russia and it was immediately obvious that he was a very able pupil. Through hard work and in spite of his English initially being quite limited, he achieved A*s in Maths and Chemistry, As in Biology and Physics, Bs in ICT and Geography and C in English. After taking A levels in Maths and Sciences, he intends to study medicine and become a doctor like both his parents.
We are committed to developing the potential in all our pupils, whatever their strengths and starting points.
