Thames Christian College is a mainstream school with recognised provision for a small number of pupils who find learning more difficult. We recognise that these pupils are generally well behaved and can be extremely gifted in creative subjects. By providing support in core academic subjects pupils with learning difficulties can become high achievers and inspire other pupils. Furthermore, teaching in a dyslexia-friendly way has been proved to raise standards for every pupil and benefit the whole class, even the most gifted.

Our excellent learning support has been recognised by CReSTeD, the Council for the Registration of Schools Teaching Dyslexic Pupils, with our inclusion on their authoritative register of dyslexia-friendly schools, one of only a handful in London. Learning support is provided on a one-to-one basis, in a small group or within the classroom, depending on need. Dyslexic pupils may, where necessary, follow a tailored curriculum taking GCSE exams in subjects that give them a greater opportunity for success.

Zuki's Story

Thoroughly disenchanted with education and not having her learning needs met, Zuki came to Thames in Year 10. In her Year 10 GCSE units, Zuki amazed herself by gaining A* and A grade passes in Science and Religious Studies. With this new-found confidence, Zuki went on in Year 11 to achieve A*s in Biology and Religious Studies, As in Maths, Physical Education and Chemistry and Bs in English, English Literature, Physics and ICT; all this having been predicted C/D grades.

Our staff take time to get to know each pupil to bring out each child’s individual gifting, leading to the opportunity for success.
